F is for Fates

I've been racking my brain for a few days trying to come up with something D&D related that starts with F. All I could think of was Fire Giant and Fire Elemental. I really didn't want to do another letter based on a monster since I've done like 3 or 4 of those already. Then it came to me, I could talk about my house rule I call Fates.

In D&D sometimes bad rolls happen, the 1st level wizard gets double criticaled and loses 20 hit points in one attack, The fighter throws his awesome sword in the ravine because he rolled a 1 on his attack, that sort of thing. In my games I run a house rule called fates. Fates are do overs. Every player get a set amount of them at the start of the game say 5 or 6 and can use them to take back one action, re roll one die, or force a monster to re roll an attack. They are my oops button.

How players use these tends to influence their life span quite a bit. A player that hordes them till they are used for life an death reasons tends to live longer than the player that blows them quickly on random attack rolls and such. I occasionally will give out more fates but not often, they are meant to be a rare resource to be used wisely

  1. That's a pretty good rule if you ask me. It improves the longevity of the players, and of the game. Provided they are used well like you said.

  2. That's a really cool idea. I think I'd probably hoard them, personally.

  3. Fates have saved my skin more often than I can count! To bad you dont accept fates on rolls for treasure any more :(
