Dungeons & Dragons Castle Ravenloft Board Game

So this weekend I attended the game day weekend at belfry library in eastern Kentucky. My friend Jon is head librarian there I I try to support him in this event every year. Had lots of fun, one game I played was the Ravenloft D&D board game put out by Wizards of the coast here is the official teaser for the game:

The master of Ravenloft is having guests for dinner—and you are invited! Evil lurks in the towers and dungeons of Castle Ravenloft, and only heroes of exceptional bravery can survive the horrors within. Designed for 1–5 players, this boardgame features multiple scenarios, challenging quests, and cooperative game play. Castle Ravenloft includes the following components: 40 plastic heroes and monsters 13 sheets of interlocking cardstock dungeon tiles 200 encounter and treasure cards Rulebook Scenario book 20-sided die.
you can purchase the game from newegg here (this is the cheapest I could find it online)

So basically the way this game is played is each of the players chooses one of the five character cards and places their mini on the start tile. From that point the board randomly opens up depending which tiles you pull from the stack. The game comes with about 15 different scenarios we played two of then and it was a blast. The game uses a very simplified version of the 4th edition rules set. One cool thing is the game is cooperative, all the players work to beat the monsters rather than against each other.

Pros: Its got a lot of re-playability, Fun, once everyone understands the rules it goes fairly quick, we won two of the scenarios in about 2 hours and we had never played the game before, Lots of minis that you could use for a real D&D game

Cons: Its fairly expensive, the game runs from $40-60 depending where you buy it, It has lots of little pieces and suffers from counter madness like lots of independent board games. Rules take a few rounds to understand and may be more confusing to people who have never played real D&D before.

  1. Cool post as usual buddy. It sounds like you had some serious fun at this thing so that's always a good thing right? The game sounds an excellent one to me as well despite it's very steep price I guess!

  2. I've only owned one DnD game, and I'm still yet to play it. I think it's actually in pieces now :( sad times.

  3. Funniest thing about this game is that it has a 1 player map option. Nothing like sitting home playing a board game by yourself :)
